For grain buyers & processors

The emissions sit upstream with suppliers.
Getting the evidence downstream is the hard part.

A significant part of your footprint sits in the grain you buy. Getting reliable information from your suppliers, at scale and when you need it, is difficult. HerwitzMueller gives you access not just to the data, but to the backing of suppliers and the methodology behind it.

Why Scope 3 matters

Most of your emissions sit upstream.

Businesses have spent years measuring and managing the emissions within their own operations. They have systems, data and people focused on the emissions they can see and control.

For food processors, a large part of the footprint sits outside their own operations, in the ingredients they buy. In grain-based foods, growing the grain can account for the majority of the carbon footprint, yet those emissions sit upstream with growers, outside the processor's own systems.

That leaves a significant blind spot. Without visibility across the supply chain, it is harder to understand and report the full footprint of a product, identify where emissions can be reduced, and work with suppliers to recognise and improve performance.

Illustrative example: carbon footprint of flour at the mill gate.

What you need

Reliable evidence, not just data.

Summary figures and data files are not enough when supplier emissions information needs to be relied on. You need an evidence package that shows how the result was produced, where it came from, and that the supplier stands behind the information they provide.

Consistent
Your suppliers measured the same way, with the information structured the way you need it.
Authorised
Approval to use the data for the agreed purpose, settled up front.
Traceable
The ability to trace the result back to its source, with the supplier ready to stand behind the information they provide.
What we do

Get the evidence you need from your suppliers.

Run a request when you need it, or integrate with your existing systems to coordinate supplier evidence on an ongoing basis.

Evidence packages

Designed to support each requirement.

Each package is structured around the supplier emissions evidence needed to support the requirement, the outputs your team needs to use, and controlled access to the underlying evidence where review or assurance is required.

Brindalow Grains
Bulk grain handler · Group 1 entity

Regulatory

Regulatory · AASB S2

With mandatory Scope 3 climate reporting, Brindalow's CFO has decided the business will use estimates where appropriate, but engage directly with key wheat suppliers to strengthen the evidence behind its largest emissions category. This hybrid approach establishes a more credible position, reduces reporting risk and better prepares the business for future assurance.

Certification

Certification · ISCC · RED III

With the recognised regional value for cultivation insufficient for a customer's biodiesel to meet RED III's 65% emissions-saving threshold, Calderbrook's trade compliance manager needs to establish whether actual cultivation emissions from its NSW growers can support the requirement. That evidence must be established upstream before it can be used through the certified supply chain.

Brackmoor is establishing an emissions-intensity KPI for the wheat it purchases as part of a new sustainability-linked facility. It needs a consistent baseline across its supplier population, and the evidence to measure performance against the agreed SPTs each year.

Our independence
Usable by every side of the trade.
Independent of the trade
HerwitzMueller is not owned by anyone who buys, handles or trades grain. As the connector between buyers and suppliers, our system is designed to meet the needs of both sides.
No counterparty lock-in
Using HerwitzMueller with one buyer or supplier does not tie you to their system or limit who else you can trade with.
Systems
Do we need to replace our existing systems?
No. HerwitzMueller works alongside the systems and processes already in place.
Data
Do suppliers lose control of their data?
No. Suppliers decide who their evidence is shared with and for what purpose.
Assurance
Can an independent assurer test the evidence?
Yes. Authorised assurers can access the evidence they need to independently test the claim.
Who is behind it

Founded from inside the industry.

HerwitzMueller was founded by Karl Pillora, who spent close to seven years in the Australian grains industry with George Weston Foods' Mauri division, one of the country's largest flour millers, leading finance, data and analytics teams, and close to the emissions and sustainability reporting the business was being asked for.
